Field trips

Details on the field trips will be posted soon!

June 8th: Mesa trail field trip: Rockies orogeny

June 15th: Chautaqua field trip: Alpine vegetation

June 22th: National Ice Core Laboratory

***Meet at 9 am at the Rec Center turn around. BE ON TIME!!! WE WILL LEAVE AT 9AM TO GET TO Denver Federal Center IN TIME FOR OUR TOUR. It's about 45 minutes drive. Our tour is scheduled from 10 - 11am, and I expect us to be back to Boulder by noon.

The U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) is a facility for storing, curating, and studying ice cores recovered from the polar regions of the world. We will be taken to the cold room where ice cores drilled from the bottom of Antarctica and Greenland are stored. Pretty cool!!!

The tour: Our visit will have two parts; a 15-20 minute warm talk and a 15-20 minute cold talk. We will most likely be split into two smaller groups which will be toured simultaneously in reverse tour order. If you have a specific interest area, please let us know beforehand so that you can get the most out of yourvisit.
***IMPORTANT!!!! Bring ID, a few warm layers, warm jacket (down jacket if you have one), long warm pants, hat, gloves and boots. Some clothing may be provided, but given the large size of the group make sure you bring your warm clothing.

Directions from Boulder:
Total trip time 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic). Take Broadway south out of Boulder. It becomes State Highway 92 and continues into Golden, eventually becoming 6th Avenue eastbound. Passing under Interstate 70, continue on 6th Avenue eastbound out of Golden to the Kipling Avenue south exit. Take Kipling Avenue south to the second light at Gate 1 of the Denver Federal Center. Turn right into Gate 1. Be prepared to show picture identification at the gate. After clearing security, drive through the gate straight ahead (the road curves somewhat to the left) to the second stop sign. Turn left. As you turn you will see the first in a series of blue and white signs that will guide you around Building 810 to NICL. Follow these signs to Door S25. Parking is unrestricted.

June 29th: ISABELLE GLACIER, joint field trip with Climate and Vegetation class

MEET AT THE REC CENTER TURN AROUND AT 9 AM. WE WILL DEPART PROMPTLY.

General Objectives: This field trip investigates the altitudinal variation of vegetation and glacial geomorphology found in the Indian Peaks section of the Colorado Front Range. As we walk along the trail, we will integrate all the concepts studied in class so far, from mountain orogeny to mountain climate, and glacier landforms to alpine vegetation patterns.
