Instuctor: Mark Williams Telephone: 492-8830

Homework 1

  1. Find 5 internet web sites that are related to snow hydrology and are of interest to you. For each site, record:
    • the title and internet address
    • a brief (2-3 sentence) description.
    (15 points)
  2. Find the Niwot Ridge LTER on-line data system on the internet. Look for the Data Set Catalog, and go to the "Hydrology and Geomorphology" section and find the data for "Snow Cover Profiles: Snow Water Equivalence". For all dates that the 006 snowpit (located at the Niwot Ridge Saddle) was sampled in 2000 create a table with the following(including units):
    • Date
    • Snow Depth
    • Mean Temperature
    • Mean Density
    • Snow Water Equivalent
  3. Using the data in your table, answer the following questions
    1. On what date was the snowpack the coldest?
    2. On what date did the snowpack become isothermal (reach an average temperature of 0 Deg C)? Did the snowpack remain isothermal?
    3. On what date did the snowpack have the highest water equivalent? Did this correspond to the date on which the snowpack was deepest? Briefly explain.
    (15 points)
