SNOW HYDROLOGY (GEOG 4321): HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 8
Instuctor: Mark Williams
Telephone: 492-8830
Homework 8
- Assigned 4 April.
- Due 8 April, 4 pm.
- There are 40 possible points.
- Write the abstract for your paper, between 250 and 400 words.
(20
points)
- title
- author
- text
- one to three sentences on your research topic and why it
is so exciting.
- one to three sentences on problem statement.
- one to three sentences on current holes in our knowledge
of these problems.
- one to three sentences on your objectives.
- three or four sentences on your methods, or the methods
of others if you are doing a literature review.
- include 3 references from journal articles (not books!)
- remember it takes time to write something short and concise.
- For each of the following sensors, provide the following
information: swath width, pixel size, spectral bands, snowpack
properties measured, advantages and limitations of the sensor with
respect to measuring those snow properties. (10 points)
- Calculate the CV as a fraction, Standard Error, CV as a percent
of the mean, and Standard Error as a percent of the mean, for SWE and
sulfate concentration collected as part of my PhD research at Emerald
Lake in the Sierra, given (5 points):
- SO4
- mean = 2.9 ueq/L
- N = 6 ueq/L
- SD = 0.4 ueq/L
- SWE
- mean = 59.8 cm
- N = 256
- SD = 37.2 cm
- Explain why SO4 concentrations have a similar standard error
as SWE even though there were less samples collected for SO4 compared
to SWE.
- How many samples do you need to be within 10% of the mean at
0.05 significance, for density and SWE, given (5 points):
- density
- mean = 500 kg/m3
- SD = 30 kg/m3
- SWE
